lithotint, 1878, on blue laid Chine appliqué, the second (final) state, signed in pencil, apart from the edition of 100, with full margins, with the customary overprinting and toning to the ivory of the wove paper, the palest light- and time staining, minor surface soiling in the lower left corner and two small stray marks in the lower right corner, a skillfully reworked area in the upper right of the image, otherwise in very good condition, framed

Lot Essay

This is a rare example of a circa 1879 proof before the 1887 edition for Notes. Spink, et al. mentions that these proofs are distinguished by the spelled-out signature. Later impressions from the edition are signed with the butterfly monogram.
