Lot Essay

Borel Fils & Co., Neuchâtel, were founded in 1850 and specialized in the manufacture of precision watches mainly for the Russian market.

The gold coin attached to the fob of the present watch was mint to commemorate Friedrich III ascension to the throne of Prussia in 1888. As his reign lasted only 99 days, such coins were in circulation only during a short period of time.

Friedrich III, Deutscher Kaiser, König von Preussen (18 October 1831 - 15 June 1888) was the son of Wilhelm I Ludwig, Deutscher Kaiser, König von Preussen and Marie Luise Auguste Catherine Prinzessin von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach. Married to Victoria Adelaide Mary Louisa Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Princess Royal of the United Kingdom (see lot 438 in this auction), he was crowned Emperor of Germany and King of Prussia on 9 March 1888 after the death of his father.
