The Reverend John Flamsteed (1646 - 1719) was appointed the first English Astronomer Royal in 1675, and in that same year laid the foundation stone of the Royal Greenwich Observatory. He was a member of the Royal Society, calculated the solar eclipses of 1666 and 1668 and was responsible for several of the earliest recorded sightings of the planet Uranus.
