Lot Essay

This picture may be one of three Venetian scenes exhibited by Vacher at the New Watercolour Society in 1848: nos. 100, 227 and 271. The subject is the annual festival at which the Doge of Venice was escorted out into the lagoon with a regatta of boats, and threw a ring into the waters, signifying his symbolic marriage with the Adriatic.
