Lot Essay

The Grecian-black slab is incorporated in an 'antique' patterned table of black figured Brazilian 'goncalo alves' wood; and its altar pillar is raised on a Grecian-stepped plinth. Popularly known as 'zebrawood' being streaked 'as the animal' according to Thomas Sheraton's, Cabinet Dictionary, 1803; it was also called 'albuera' wood by firms, such as Gillow of London and Lancaster.
