Lot Essay

A day before the publication of this print, George III had asked Mr Pitt to form a new administration. Here we see many of the political figures of the day in a parody of the most serious type of academic history painting. As Addington unsuccessfully attempts to defend the Treasury with a syringe, the characteristically gaunt yet rosy cheeked Pitt crowns the pyramid of mock heroic figures which includes Fox brandishing a giant blunderbuss.
