Lot Essay

Following the 1807 dissolution of parliament, Westminster radicals decided to run Sir Francis Burdett and Mr Paull as candidates. As a result of a dispute in affairs surrounding the Westminster election, Sir Fancis, here depicted as a goose, and Mr Paull, a tailor here shown with his sissors, fought a duel. Reportedly the first shots both missed and the second shots injured both parties. As shown in Gillray's print, it is fortunate that their seconds, seen cowering by the tree, were not required.
