Lot Essay

The sarcophagus wine-cellaret is conceived in the manner of a Grecian cippus altar, with palm-flowered acrotia in the fashion popularised by George Smith's, Collection of Designs for Household Furniture, 1808 ( pl.98). Smith's later publication entitled The Cabinet Maker and Upholsterers Guide, also featured a Grecian cellaret pattern with triumphal-arched dome ( pl.4).
A closely related sarcophagus, but lacking bacchic laurel-festooned ram-masks, was sold Sotheby's London 12 November 1993 lot 169.
