Lot Essay

This drop-leaf table is very closely related to a corner table design by Gillows, dated 1768 or 1769 and illustrated in L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 52. A similar corner table is illustrated in J. T. Kirk, American Furniture & The British Tradition to 1830, New York, 1982, p. 324, figs. 1262 and 1264. A virtually identical drop-leaf table was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 8 July 1999, lot 78 (£17,825).
