CUSTINE, Astolphe, Marquis de (1790-1857). Autograph letter signed to an unidentified Duke [in Rome], St Gratien, 12 August 1857, one page, 8vo, blank.
Referring flatteringly to his admiration for his correspondent's good use of his time and saying that he has given a letter [of introduction] to the Comte and Comtesse de Pulligny who are travelling to Italy. 'Je m'assure qu'avec vos indications ils verront Rome mieux que la plupart des étrangers ne la voient, soit pour l'art, soit pour le monde'; he regrets that he cannot himself act as their cicerone.
Custine's literary reputation was made by his account of his travels in Russia in 1839.
