A lady in waiting to the Archduchess Isabella, Sophie contracted a morganatic marriage (her non-royal status disqualifying her from a royal marriage) with the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1900, and thereafter had a considerable influence on his political outlook. She was assassinated with him at Sarajevo in 1914.
