A letter of courteous remembrance: 'Nous touts qui sommes icy, moi, les Dames, le filz et la fille remercions vostre Illustrete de la souvenance qu'elle a de nous: et la prions de croire que ce qui a manque au traittement deu a ses qualitez est supplee par l'affection qui a este, est, et sera toujours tres sincere'; expressing his pleasure that the recipient is in a 'lieu de repos', asking for news and expressing his willingness to serve him.

Grotius, who was exiled from Holland as an Arminian, served as Swedish ambassador in Paris from 1634. The recipient, Freiherr von Degenfeld, was a general in the French (and previously in the Swedish) service, under whom Grotius's son, Cornelis, had served.
