We are grateful to Dr. Sam Segal for proposing the atttribution to Jacob van Huysum, and for suggesting that the present work is probably a late example, circa 1737, on the basis of photographs.
Jacob was the son of Justus van Huysum (1659-1716), who founded the family flower-painting business in Amsterdam, including his sons Jan, Justus II and Michiel as well as Jacob. Jacob travelled to London in the 1720's where he earned a reputation as a copyist of Italian masterpieces and emulated his brother Jan's style.
