The harp is signed Antoine. The two best known French harp makers in the 19th century are Antoine-Joseph 'Adolphe' Sax (1814 -1894) and Sebastian Erard (1752-1831). Antoine-Joseph 'Adolphe' Sax was a Belgian musical instrument designer and musician (clarinetist), best known for inventing the saxophone. Adolphe studied the flute and clarinet at the Brussels Conservatory and in 1842 went to Paris. Christie's have offered a number of harps for sale by Sebastian Erard. A notable example of 'A parcel-gilt, ebonised, giltwood and gilt-gesso harp' was sold at Christie's Amsterdam on 20th June 2000 as lot 95.
