A Chinese armorial oval platter, circa 1790
the grisaille and gilt coat-of-arms above a scroll with the motto 'Fide et Conflantia', a gilt coronet and sepia bird-of-prey crest above, the well and rim with narrow borders picked out in blue enamel, iron-red and gilt-- 13in. (33cm.) wide; and a famille rose jug and cover, enamelled with floral sprays below the rim with a trellis diaper band, the cover similarly decorated, mounted with an 18th century gilt metal thumb piece, Qianlong -- the porcelain 7 13/16in. (19.8cm.) high. (2)

Lot Essay

The arms are of Lee as borne by the Earls of Lichfield. See D.S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, London, 1974, p.762, who explains that the service must have been commissioned by a descendant or more distant relative as the title became extinct with the death of the 4th Earl in 1776.
