A SILVER-MOUNTED D.B. FLINTLOCK BOX-LOCK PISTOL BY MEWIS & CO.
Birmingham silver hallmarks for 1784, silver maker's mark CF
With brass turn-off cannon barrels, brass border-engraved action signed on a rococo ribbon on the right and fitted with sliding cut-off on the left, engraved iron sliding trigger-guard safety-catch, figured walnut butt profusely inlaid with silver wire shells and scrolls carrying engraved small silver flowerheads, silver butt-cap cast in low relief and centering on a lion recumbent on a wall, and vacant silver escutcheon, Birmingham private proof marks (the action and trigger-guard each slightly rubbed, the butt with small bruises, a small crack and small pieces of inlay missing).
