Lot Essay

Railings surrounded objects of veneration such as stupas and became a particular focus of decoration. Railings were constructed with pillars carved with eye-shaped openings on the side to hold horizontal tenons; for a railing section similarly decorated with flowerheads, see S. Czuma, Kushan Sculpture: Images from Early India, 1985, cat. no. 29, p. 91f.
