The red Buddha Amitabha (Immeasurable Light) sits in the meditation posture. Seated in front of him are the eight principal Bodhisattvas of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, considered to be the eight main students of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni. Noteworthy amongst them are Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara, Vajrapani and Maitreya. Four additional attendant figures stand to the right and left of Amitabha.
At the top left is the Tantric form of Vajrapani, blue and wrathful in appearance, with Manjushri below, golden and holding an upraised sword. On the right side is the white Avalokiteshvara with four hands, and below him is the red wrathful figure Hayagriva with three faces and six (or eight) hands.
