Lot Essay

The inscription beneath the lama at top reads, Jetsun Lobzang Thubten Chokyi Nyima la namo!, which is translated to "Homage to the Reverend Lobzang Thubten Chokyi Nyima." The inscription on the reverse states that this painting was used by the Omniscient Panchen Lama for one year while he was doing Buddhist foundational practices.

The painting is exceptionally finely executed with highlights in gold. Compare with a thangka of Amitabha in the Imperial Collection at Yonghegong, see Xu Baosin et al. (eds.), Beautiful Thangka Paintings in Yonghegong, vol. 1, 2002, p. 38.
