Persian manuscript on buff paper, 80ff., each with 21ll. of elegant black nasta'liq divided into two columns with gold intercolumnar rules, laid down within polychrome margins on cream borders with fine gold illumination in a variety of designs including animals hunting, simurghs, dragons, flowers and grotesque animal faces, panels for headings with blue and gold illumination outlined in green or red, opening bifolio with double-page gold and polychrome illumination, first page with rectangular panel with gold and polychrome illuminated medallion and spandrels on a ground with gold scrolling floral vine, colophon on gold-speckled cream leaf, signed Haydar ibn Ibrahim al-Husayni al-Katib and dated twice, once in the text 989 and later in figures, 975, later owners' seals and notes on the back page, excellent condition, with later lacquer boards with central polychrome floral design and borders with gold floral meander on green ground, spine restored, doublures with green stars on gold ground

Lot Essay

Haydar Ibn Ibrahim al-Husayni al-Katib is an obscure scribe of the 16th century. A copy of the Divan of Mani from the Shaykh Safi shrine is in the Public Library in St. Petersburgh. It is signed Haydar-e Ibrahim (Haydar son of Ibrahim) al-Husayni and dated AH 961/1554 AD. A preface of an album in the National Library in Vienna is also similarly signed and dated AH 980/1581-2 AD (Mehdi Bayani, Ahval va Asar-e Khosh-Nevisan, Vol. I, Teheran, 1345 sh., pp. 171-2).
