A MOROCCAN GEMSET GOLD BELT BUCKLE (BZIM)

Of cusped pointed oval form, the body in three hinged panels, the main one with central emerald surrounded by stepped bands of rose-cut diamonds and rubies, around these a larger band of openwork decoration with applied floral and drop-shaped panels set with emeralds and rubies, the two elements flanking the centre with floral motifs composed of central emeralds radiating lines of rubies all on a similar ground of openwork scrolls, with four small attachment loops, the reverse with two later applied hook fixtures

Lot Essay

The central panel of this buckle was almost certainly a forehead ornament which was then re-used and converted into this buckle. Similar tri-partite buckles are in a private collection (Abderrahman Slaoui, Parures en Or du Maroc, Casablanca, 1999, pp.152-157).
