Lot Essay

Cream-glazed parrots are relatively rare, being more frequently found in coloured enamels, such as green and turquoise. A pair of cream-glazed parrots on green and aubergine rockwork bases, similarly modelled to the present lot, was in the Alfred Schönlicht Collection, exhibited Chinesischer Kunst, Berlin, 1929, catalogue no. 962 and later sold Sotheby's, 13 December 1955, lot 152 (£ 480 to Partridge). A pair of very similarly modelled parrots, but with pale green bodies and deeper green wing feathers are in the Rijksmuseum, illustrated by C.J.A. Jörg, Chinese Ceramics in the Collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, 1997, no. 218, p. 193, purchased in these Rooms, 10 & 11 June, 1914, lot 45; the beaks and feet of the Rijksmuseum examples have been cold-painted in red, which may originally have been the case with the present lot.
