Lot Essay

Accompanied by Patek Philippe Certificate of Origin dated 3 July 1996 confirming production of the present watch with ardoise or slate grey dial, diamond-set numerals and 40 baguette-cut diamonds of 2.97 carats. Furthermore delivered with the plain platinum screw back numbered 2'953'469, platinum, wooden and cabochon emerald-set setting pin, wooden presentation box and outer packaging. The present watch has never been offered at auction before.

This watch is one of only three ref. 3990 in platinum to appear in public to date. It is furthermore the only example of this series fitted with the "ardoise" or grey dial with diamond numerals.

According to tradition, the present watch is the first ever made ref. 3990 in platinum and was apparently the prominent showpiece at Patek Philippe's 1996 stand at the prestigious BaselWorld.

In today's world where at times even the complicated masterpiece appears to become accessible, making an individual statement is paramount.
