(Folding map cleanly torn and with adhesive tape repairs on verso, light browning and soiling, some waterstaining of end quires.) Original blue cloth with anchor device in gilt on upper and in blind on lower cover, yellow endpapers with publisher's advertisements, without pocket in rear cover intended to hold the cancellans section (extremities rubbed, corners bumped, inner hinges repaired).
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE with transposed text on pp. 178, 180 and 190, this one of 'a few copies' issued without the cancellans and without the pocket in rear cover. Darwin contributed Section VI on 'Geology' (pp. 156-195). Other contributors included Herschel, Richard Owen and William Hooker. The book went through six editions and remained in print until 1906.
