NIETZSCHE, Friedrich (1844-1900). Homer und die klassische Philologie. Basel: [for the author by G.A. Bonfantini,] 1869.

8° (214 x 148mm). Original blue-green moiré wrappers (spine-ends chipped, light wear and light soiling).

FIRST EDITION of Nietzsche's inaugural lecture delivered upon taking his Professorship at the University of Basel; its central concern being the distinction and tension between Homer as a concept and Homer as a person. RARE: one of only 30 copies printed and 'meant only for the closest circle of friends' which Nietzsche distributed over the Christmas holiday 'with great pride' (Schaberg, p.15). ABPC records no copy selling at auction in over 30 years. WorldCat lists only one copy in the U.S.A. at the Houghton Library, Harvard; Schaberg adds one copy at the University of Basel, one at the Bodleian, and 5 at the Anna Amalia Library in Weimar. Apparently not in the Swiss National Library. Schaberg, The Nietzsche Canon, pp.15-16.
