Lot Essay

The dressoir was first used as a meuble d'apparat in the Middle Ages to display objets précieux such as crokery and silverware, with the higher shelf of the dressoir generally covered in rich textile on which the most valuable pieces of the household would be placed. A related dressoir de mariage, dated 1524 and featuring comparable carving and linen fold panels was previously in the Musée de Cluny, Paris (ill. J. Boccador, Le Mobilier Français du Moyen Age à la Renaissance, Saint-Rémy-en-l'Eau, 1988, p. 109).
