The author was an industrious and intelligent botanist, and had traversed the greater part of the United States, in order to examine its natural productions in their native situations. In the compilation of this work he had access to the most celebrated herbariums of England, and was aided and especially patronized by A. B. Lambert, Esq., V. P. of the L. S." (Rich). Pursh used specimens collected by Lewis and Clark for many of his descriptions of the Pacific Coast plants.
