CATLIN, George (1796-1872). Letters and Notes on the Manners, Customs, and Condition of the North American Indians. London: Published by the Author, 1841.

2 volumes, tall 8o (239 x 156 mm). Errata slip tipped in at front. Frontispiece, 3 maps, and 309 plates on 176 leaves. Contemporary deluxe binding of black morocco gilt, edges gilt. Provenance: Sir Charles A. Murray (1806-1895), diplomatist and author (presentation inscriptions from the author, ink stamp on front free endpaper).

Stated second edition, though a variant bearing the same imprint as the first. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED IN EACH VOLUME BY CATLIN TO CHARLES AUGUSTUS MURRAY, HIS PATRON on the front flyleaf: "Hon C.A. Murray, from the Author 1841. Geo. Catlin." Murray organized Catlin's exhibition at Egyptian Hall in London and he is depicted by Catlin in his Indian Portfolio as the figure being chased by a bison. Murray was also "Master of the Queen's Household" and was instrumental in getting her to subscribe. "In 1834 Murray visited the United States and in 1835 he joined a group of wandering Pawnees: his three months in the wilds, with many exciting adventures and narrow escapes, were afterwards described, together with his visit to Cuba, in his Travels in North America (1839)" (Oxford DNB). The numbering of the plates is inconsistent: the title-page calls for 400 plates and the terminal plate is captioned "312." Here there are three unnumbered etchings, plates 101½ and 210½, but no illustrations (as called for) numbered 2, 23, 137, 142, 149, 159, 246 or 247. The title-page here states "second edition" but contains the same imprint as the first edition: "Published by the Author, at the Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly." Clark Old South III:141; Howes C-241; Sabin 11536; Streeter sale III:105; Wagner-Camp-Becker 84:1; Wheat Mapping the Transmississippi West II:453-55. A SUPERB ASSOCIATION COPY IN THE DELUXE BINDING.
