MURRAY, Charles Augustus, Sir. Travels in North America During the Years 1834, 1835, & 1836. Including a Summer Residence with the Pawnee Tribe of Indians, in the Remote Prairie of the Missouri, and a visit to Cuba and the Azore Islands. London: Richard Bentley, 1839.
Volume 2 only (of 2), 8o (224 x 138 mm). Frontispiece. (Lacking 8 leaves, which were apparently removed to transmit changes to the printer, see below.) Original brown cloth (hinges cracked, light rubbing).
FIRST EDITION, CORRECTED BY THE AUTHOR, with marginal corrections and annotations on some twenty-eight pages, including changes to wording, punctuation and reference. The most substantive note is on page 75, which Murray later crossed out: "This is ineptly worded; it would imply that I had seen Mrs H[unter] in her bed-chamber." On the endpapers, Murray has written a summary of the corrections. The only corrections accepted (as seen when comparing to the second edition of volume 2 in the set below) were those on the 8 leaves torn out of this volume: pp.39-40, 47-48, 49-50, 71-72, 79-80, 81-82, 123-124 and 261-262.
