Lot Essay

FRANCES CRESSET IS RECORDED IN THE 1663 HERALDS' VISITATION AS HAVING MARRIED MARY, DAUGHTER OF SIR HENRY ROBINSON.
GIVEN THE INSCRIPTION ON THE PRESENT PORTRAIT SUGGESTS THE SITTER WAS AGED 49 IN 1679, THIS WOULD SUGGEST THAT IT IS A PORTRAIT OF SOMEONE BORN IN 1630. AS SUCH, IT IS MORE LIKELY TO BE ROBERT CRESSETT OF UPTON CRESSETT (1631-1702), SON OF RICHARD CRESSETT (B. C.1611), ELDER BROTHER OF FRANCIS CRESSETT. THE ARMS ON THE PORTRAIT ARE FOR THE CRESSTT FAMILY.
