Lot Essay

The marble-topped commode, embellished with golden sunflowered libation-patera handles, is conceived in the 1770s antique fashion as a window-pier commode-table. Designed in the half-round Roman 'medallion' fashion, its pilasters and columnar legs are inlaid in trompe l'oeil with antique flutes; while its frieze, façade and 'encoignure' cabinets are mosaic-parquetried with ray-banded tablets, whose golden lozenged compartments evoke the Roman coffering of the temple of Venus.
