Lot Essay

The marble-topped commode, or commode á battants d'encoignure, embellished with golden sunflowered libation-patera handles, is conceived in 1770s antique fashion as a window-pier commode-table. The rectilinear chest's cut-cornered pilasters and columnar legs are inlaid in trompe l'oeil with antique flutes, while its frieze and façade are mosaic-parquetried with fretted-ribbons banding tablets, whose lozenged veneer evokes the Roman coffering of the temple of Venus.
