The Crowninshields were a founding family of the lucrative China trade out of Salem, Mass., lending their name to one of the town's prominent wharves. George Crowninshield, Jr. is most famed for building Cleopatra's Barge, the first yacht to cross the Atlantic. See J. Mudge, Chinese Export Porcelain, p. 105.
