Lot Essay

Professor Jaap Bolten kindly confirmed the attribution upon inspection of the drawing and dates it to circa 1593-5. The drawing will be included in his forthcoming catalogue of the artist's drawings. As indicated by the incisions, the present lot was used for the print by de Gheyn (M.G. Roethlisberger, Abraham Bloemaert and his sons, paintings and prints, Doornspijk, 1993, I, p. 89, no. 42, II, fig. 77). The authenticity of a less detailed version, not incised, offered at Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 2 November 1987, lot 15, was doubted by Filedt Kok (op.cit.).
