an east tibetan, derge, gilt and silvered iron priest-helmet, in fitting wood and leather casket
circa 17th century
The parcel silvered domed-shaped helmet moulded with gilded scrolling lotus-petals, the rim similar moulded, the top part with partly gilt lotus base, supporting a silvered skull, the eyes set with glass-beads, supporting a partly gilded and silvered flaming trisula, the central finial with the gilded mantra hum, the rim with six similar silvered skulls, each with a pair of gilded and silvered flames coming out of their cheeks, on top of their heads a gilded flame finial, each set with a large coral or turquoise bead, the inside with cloth, in wood and leather fitted casket, domed-shaped, decorated with copper bands and shaped-square copper placque on top, incised with scrolling flowers and the domed-shaped finial with looped twisted ring
