John Thwaites was the son of Ainsworth Thwaites, founder of the Thwaites clockmaking dynasty. Apprenticed in 1772, John was Free of the Clockmakers Company 1772-1820. He made the clock of St Paul's chapel in New York. Thwaites numbered their movements, often selling them to other makers. The number on the present clock gives an approximate manufacturing date of 1802.
