DICKENS, Charles. Is She His Wife? Or, Something Singular. A Comic Burletta in One Act. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1877.
16o (120 x 80 mm). Half-title, publisher's advertisements on endpapers. Two woodcuts. (Some very minor marginal dampstaining to a few leaves.) Original green cloth, stamped in black and gilt (some minor rubbing at extremities and ends of spine, front hinge starting); black cloth chemise and quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: Kenyon Starling (bookplate).
FIRST AMERICAN EDITION of Dickens's third stage effort. The play, a one act comedy based on a series of misunderstandings among its characters, was originally written and staged in 1837 and only ran for a short period of time. No copy of that 1837 edition survives as the last copy existing, purchased by Osgood, was destroyed in a fire in December 1879. This present American edition is preceded by an extremely rare English edition printed circa 1873, of which, according to Eckel, only three known copies survive.
