A SELJUK TURQUOISE INSET GOLD NECKLACE
IRAN, 12TH CENTURY
Comprising twelve parts, four of long tapering hexagonal-section cylinders, the wider end capped by a domed panel, four separate similar domed panels, and four straight-sided hexagonal cylinders, each decorated with twisted wire along the leading edges, the panels thus formed with granulated triangles, small circles of twisted wire, applied circular and drop-shaped bosses and inset turquoise glazed pottery panels of similar shapes, most with the remains of a core, some loss of inlay
Largest bead 2 1/8in. (5.5cm.) long

Lot Essay

Two similar gold elements of very similar form and also with granulation and wire decoration comprising two of the drop-shaped elements and two of the smaller domed elements are published in B. Segall, B. Katalog der Goldschmiedearbeiten, Benaki Museum Athen, Athens, 1938, figs. 278 and 282. There is another necklace in the National Museum in Damascus (Inv. no. 3976) bearing twelve tear-drop shaped elements, the upper sections of which are sheet constructed and decorated with wire, and the lower sections of which are executed only in filigree.
