Hailing from Greenwich, Connecticut, Michael Lauer stands as a racing specialist who took top honors in the GTS Class at the Rolex 24 at Daytona during his third participation at this event.
In 2000 at his first appearance at the famed race Lauer co-drove a Porsche 996 GT3-R with the legendary actor Paul Newman, Mike Brochman and Gunnar Jeanette (who Lauer also raced with at LeMans in the same year). The team amazingly featured the oldest driver, Newman at 75 years old and the youngest, Jeanette at a mere 17 years of age. The team finished 62nd overall.
Lauer returned to Daytona in 2001 in a Ford R&S co-driving with Norman Simon, Brian DeVries and Mark Simo finishing overall in 70th place. But it was in 2002 that Michael Lauer claimed his Rolex 24 win in his third start. Racing with team owner Paul Gentilozzi, Brian Simo and Scott Pruett, the four drove to place first in the GTS class and 5th overall in the Rocketsports Racing Jaguar (No. 3). For Jaguar it was the firm's first win at Daytona since 1992 and the brand was designated "Daytona's Sports Car of the Year."
He was quoted to say about the experience that, "There's not a better bunch of guys or drivers to work with. They took care of most of the racing and made it very easy for me. I knew my job was not to damage the car and I succeeded in that. This is the 'Dream Team'. Driving with this team was an incredible privilege. It was wonderful."
