AN ATTIC MASTOID CUP, BELONGING TO PISTIAS CLASS N
EARLY 5TH CENTURY B.C.
Side A: Two silhouette figures, a maenad running to the right, holding a piece of clothing high in her right hand, is pursued by a komast who reaches for the cloth held by the maenad
Side B: Two dancing komasts in silhouette, both naked and with large white wreaths hanging from their upheld arms, a painted white snake stands vertical in the field to the left
An ivy leaf beneath each handle, dotted band running below the scenes, plain black-glazed interior
2½ in. (6.5 cm.) high, 3¼ in. (8.5 cm.) diam.
Provenance
Property from the Collection of the Princely House of Liechtenstein; acquired by Prince Johann II (1840-1929) in the late 19th/early 20th Century.
