Lot Essay

The present lot is the only known print of this hitherto unknown image, not recorded in Phillips, Photographic Work of Kertész in France, CUNY, 1985. The Médiathèque du Patrimoine which houses Kertész's negatives does not hold the negative of this photograph.

Rogi André (née Rozsi Klein) and Kertész wed in October 1928. By 1931 the couple had separated and in 1932 they eventually divorced. During the separation and after the divorce, Kertész apparently never spoke of Rogi again. This image of Kertész shooting the present lot has been dated to the years 1928-30, after the periodical depicted published its maiden issue in July 1928 and before the pair's fateful separation in 1931.
