Lot Essay

A leading figure in Japanese photography since the 1960s, Moriyama has consistently pushed the boundaries of photographic possibilities. Extreme close-up, radical framing and high contrast have rendered this image, taken for the monthly magazine Shashin Jidai, into a multi-layered grid of black diagonals and white ovals. Twenty-one years after making this photograph, he breathes new life into it with this oversized silkscreen on canvas.

This work is AP 1 from the edition of one plus one AP and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, signed by Moriyama.
