ALLIONI, Carlo (1725-1804). Flora Pedemontana. Turin: Michele Briolo, 1785. 3 volumes, 2° (430 x 265mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece, half titles, 3 titles printed in red and black with engraved vignettes, 92 engraved plates (lacking the two additional plates 'i' and 'ii' required by Stafleu, 2 plates very lightly spotted, all captioned in ink in a neat contemporary hand). Contemporary half red leather over marbled paper covered boards, flat spines ruled in gilt in 7 compartments, lettered in second, fourth and seventh, vellum tips, marbled endpapers, edges uncut (minor wear to extremities, very minor spotting to one text leaf in vol. 2, an extremely light marginal dampstain to 2 text leaves in vol. 2, otherwise in lovely, fresh, unsophisticated condition).
FIRST EDITION of one of the earliest Italian regional floras, by 'il Linneo piemontese' (Stafleu). The Flora Pedemontana is his most important work listing 2,800 plants divided into 12 classes; the 92 plates illustrate 237 species. The general scheme of the work was influenced by Haller's Historia stirpium indigenarum Helvetiae inchoata, published in Berne in 1768 (see lot 333).
