Unusual both in design and technique, this appliqué rug most likely dates from the 19th century. Its format and its central sunburst medallion are similar to Central Asian Suzani embroideries, however, the technique is more akin to some European textiles. Multiple cotton panels are sewn together and the appliqué is sewn onto to the surface. The design is also reminiscent of Arraiolos features having a flat and thick floral vinery motif. The Portuguese carpet in Miss Duke's collection (lot 31 in this sale) displays this motif as well, and adds to the complexity of establishing a place of origin for this appliqué rug. Like Suzani textiles, this rug at one time boasted bright colors as evident by the remnants of jewel blue in the field. Now, the fading of the blue field creates a chic denim effect which further emphasizes the yellow appliqué flowers. Thus, this rug successfully combines interesting technique, design and color making it a unique and intriguing example.
