Several successful Ukrainian carpet factories are known from the 19th Century. While many carpets produced in this area were primarily flatwoven, there was also a tradition of fully and partially-piled carpets, as evident by the rug offered here. The flatweave serves as a base for the floral pile design. Many Ukrainian and Bessarabian examples employ a strong and dark palette, often with allover designs. This carpet is distinguished by its use of light colors. The design was likely inspired by French carpets that the weavers would have had knowledge of such as Savonnerie and Aubusson while still maintaining Ukrainian tradition.
