II, type-ornaments and woodcut decorations. With the initial blank leaf in vol. II. (Light browning at beginning and end of vol. I and from Ff in vol. II, a few small stains in vol. II.) DEDICATION COPY of the first edition edited by Silvestre and Des Maizeaux from the author's manuscripts, and the first London edition. Montagu was a patron of the philosopher and playwright St.-Evremond, paying him a pension of £100 per annum. Silvestre, in his address to Montagu, states that he is following the wishes of the late author in dedicating this work to his noble patron. With a formidable wit, love of grandeur, and facility for self-advancement, Montagu welcomed his two appointments as ambassador-extraordinary to the court of Louis XIV, and it is in the style of Versailles that he had the Montagu seat of Boughton remodelled into a great English noble house. Brunet V, 39; Tchemerzine X, 100. (2)
