Engraved frontispieces, titles, and dedication, 20 engraved plates, 20 vignettes and 23 culs-de-lampe including 9 full-page, by Baquoy, Mesnil, Patas and others after Gravelot. (Light offsetting to plates, occasional spotting, two marginal tears.) Contemporary French red morocco, gilt triple fillet borders, gilt-tooled spines with green morocco labels (light rubbing to extremities).
A FINE COPY OF THE RARE QUARTO EDITION on papier de Hollande with legends in Italian. This edition is noted for the fidelity of Gravelot's illustrations and his particularly accomplished culs-de-lampe. Brunet V, 667; Cohen/de Ricci 974-975: 'très belle édition ... avec illustrations superbes'; Ray, French, 22/22A (8vo edition): 'a handsome and delightful book particularly in the rare 4to edition'.
