QING DYNASTY, 17TH/18TH CENTURY

The exceptional album leaf finely embroidered in a satin stitch technique on a cream silk ground, to depict a Buddhist arhat, accompanied by an acolyte holding a lion cub before an assitant supporting a toke on his back laiden with a srtaw mat attached to one side and a fan and document on the other, a Buddhist ritual staff is revealed in the clouds above, the silk threads of an extremely subtle palette in greys and browns with details highlighted in bright blue 10 1/8 x 8 1/2 in. (25.6 x 21.6 cm)

Lot Essay

This album leaf is one leaf from the Shiliu Yingzhen Tuce, an album depicting the Sixteen Arhats. A set closely related to the present lot, dated to the Qing dynasty, is in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, and illustrated in Guoli Gugong Bowuyuan Cixiu, Embroidery in the Collection of the National Palace Museum, Gakken, Tokyo, 1970, plate 80 (fig.1). Another set dated to the Ming dynasty can be found in Zhixiu Shuhua, Gugong Bowuyuan Cang Zhenpin Quanji, Embroidered Pictures, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 2005, plate 2.6. One more set dated to the Ming dynasty is recorded in the Shanghai Museum collection.
