The Anatomy of an Horse. London: M. Flesher for the author, and are to be sold by T. Flesher, 1683. 2° (362 x 230mm), engraved frontispiece portrait of the author by and after R. White, 49 numbered engraved plates (lacks initial blank and R3, lower margins and final leaves waterstained, some marginal soiling and occasional spotting, small stain on plates 12 and 29), contemporary gilt-panelled red morocco, gilt edges (extremities worn, lower joints cracked). Provenance: Dodgson Hamilton Madden (bookplate) -- purchased from R.E. Way, 16 February 1970, for £140.

LARGE PAPER COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. Snape, who was farrier to Charles II, claimed that his family had held the position of farriers to the crown for "these two Hundred Years". The fine engravings in his book were copied from the woodcuts in Carlo Ruini's Dell'anotomia et dell'infirmita del cavallo (1598). Huth p. 26; Mellon/Podeschi 31; Wing S4382.
