WALTER CLOPTON WINGFIELD
A memorial album, large 4°, containing a collection of manuscript and printed ephemera mounted on 15 leaves, all relating to Wingfield, including invoices made out to him in his last years and also several references to his will, red boards with string tie, front cover with Wingfield arms applied in embroidery, c. 1930.
Items include a Bank of England cheque, 4 April 1912, signed "Walter Wingfield"; a 6-line note in his hand, stating the form his obituary notice should take in the "Times, Standard, Telegraph, Morning Post and Daily Mail", and a press-cutting of the obituary actually published in the Daily Mail, 23 April 1912, under the heading "Lawn Tennis Inventor. Death of Major W. Clopton Wingfield"; also in his hand another 4-line note "To my executors", 21 July 1911, a one-page "List of Personal Jewellery for CDC", and a one-page "Estimate of Household Expenses" at "100 Buckingham Palace Road"; invoices are from from such diverse sources as Cawthorn and Huttt's lending library, Hawkes and Co., Chelsea Water Company, the Gas Light and Coke Company, and Salt and Sons [Solicitors] detailing costs in making out his will, 1898; a large share certificate in the Russian Petroleum & Liquid Fuel Company, is made out to Major Wingfield, 15 July 1902; printed ephemera includes a one-page letting-notice for the family home at Rhysnant Hall, Montgomeryshire, and two copies of Wingfield's visiting card, with the address of his last home at 33 St. Georges Square; there are also fragments of family letters and a number of envelopes addressed to "Major Wingfield", together with some modern items, including a few photographs.
Walter Clopton Wingfield (1833-1912) patented a "Portable Court for Playing Tennis" in February 1874 and in the same month published the first rules in a booklet entitled "The Major's Game of Lawn Tennis". This album, which seems to have been compliled in the 1930's but with some later additions, affords clues about the closing years of his life and contains rare examples of his hand-writing and signature.
